Advantages of using cloud computing;
1. Always-on availability - Most cloud providers are extremely reliable in providing their services, with many maintaining the accurate uptime.
2. Improved mobility - Data and applications hosted on cloud are available to all the employees irrespective of where they are placed in the world.
3. Expenses can be quickly reduced - During times of recession or business break down, cloud computing offers a flexible cost structure, thereby limiting exposure.
4. Flexible capacity - Cloud is the flexible facility that can be turned up, down or off depending upon circumstances.
Hazards in implementing cloud computing;
1. Data breaches and security issues - Cloud data is accessible from anywhere on the internet, meaning that if a data breach occurs via hacking, a disgruntled employee, or careless username/password security, your business data can be compromised.
2. Possible downtimes - Cloud computing makes your business dependent on the reliability of your Internet connection.
3. Account hijacking - Attackers are be able to use the cloud application to launch other attacks. Phishing, fraud, and software exploits are still successful with cloud services adding a new dimension to the threat.
4. Hacked interfaces and APIs - There is an increasing risk with third parties that rely on APIs and build on the interfaces, as organizations may need to expose more services and credentials.
5. Exploited system vulnerabilities - System vulnerabilities have become a bigger problem with the advent of multitenancy in cloud computing.
In my opinion, one must determine the business impact and IT advantages they want to achieve, and understand how the cloud provider can help in managing inherent security risks and configure the cloud environment according to the business context.One approach might be to start cloud computing slowly, choose one or two of your business applications to replace and see how it goes.
