Negotiation Exercise 6 Sudden Prep Negotiation Situation Background - Resident/Constituents: You are a group of angry residents and constituents in the small town of Chappel in British Columbia. You and your fellow citizens have just learned that town council has decided to approve the Kinder Morgan proposal to construct a portion of their pipeline along a route that is one kilometer from town. The proposal has also been approved by the Canadian Federal Government. The community is situated in a beautiful, pristine area of central British Columbia, along a corridor that is well known for it's beautiful forests, lakes and streams. Although several environmental groups along the route have been very vocal in opposing the project and a few "activists" have made presentations to council urging their rejection of the proposed construction and location of the pipeline, the rest your community has taken little notice; expecting that the pipeline WOUId hOt be approved. However, the council's decision has taken the residents by surprise and now many of you have suddenly decided to act. You and a large group of angry residents/constituents have met at town hall and are now on your way to the mayor's house. You know he is a business owner and stands to gain personally from the construction activity associated with the pipeline. Consequently, that is why you and the group of residents have decided to go to the mayor's house and strongly protest the council's decision. The local media have been alerted and they are following you and your group taking pictures and interviewing part of the contingent. You will arrive at the mayor's door step in a half hour and as you walk you prepare your negotiation strategy. Many of your group is chanting while they march: "That's what we get, a pipeline pit, while councillors get the benefit". Some of the residents are waving oil cans and signs denouncing individual councillors, threatening to dump oil on the lawn of the mayor and councillors shouting, "You make the mess - new clean it up"! All of you are angry and want the decision to be reversed or you and your group will act to force the councillors to reconsider.
