New cities from scratch are often portrayed as utopian and solutions to the problems of existing cities (pollution, crime, poverty, poor housing, and infrastructure, etc.). This was the case with the 20th Century British New Town movement and it is again the case with new smart and sustainable master planned cities, although the details are very different. Given the readings, viewings, and listening this week, how would you assess the promises made about scratch cities and what might be of concern?
