Nonrealistic conflicts are seldom, if ever, productive, except when the only reasonable purpose is "winning" or harming the other party. Realistic conflicts are not necessarily productive but can be when the parties involved feel that they both (all) can achieve goals important to them, when solutions are identified that the parties find at least to be satisfactory, and when competition has as its aim finding superior solutions, not winning per se.
