Norms are shared expectations for appropriate behavior within a group (or society). They are powerful influences and coordinators of group behavior because those who break a norm face sanctions. A classic example of the power of norms in influencing group behavior was seen in the Hawthorne Studies at Western Electric (from 1927-1932). Workers colluded and restricted output to avoid being a "curve buster." Everyone produced at the same level to avoid having management place additional expectations on them, and protect team members from standing out (in positive and negative ways). Workers would face punishments and scolding from their team members if they performed out of the desired range. To experiment on just how powerful norms can be, I am asking each student to identify a norm and then break it in front of other people. Please do not break a law or put yourself (or anyone else) in danger. Also please do not break a norm that will create serious consequences for you (personally or professionally). In short, be creative, have fun, but please use your best judgment. If you have any questions, please ask! 1. Please share a very short description of the norm that you broke, and what you expected the reaction to be. 2. Next please share what you did, what the reactions were, what sanctions (or punishments) you faced), and what you learned from the experience. I would like students to share videos or devise other creative ways to share what you did with the class. I want you to make this engaging for all (and perhaps set a new norm for our class to follow in our forum participation!). Creativity will be prized. 3. Share what you learned from this experiment, and suggest at least 2 norms that you would you like to put into place in your team.
