Journal Notes Example (excerpts) 10/22/2020 'People Tell Me I'm White" Stephen Colbert and Comic Deconstruction of Colorblindness - Opens about how humor can overstep boundaries - Humor is used to reflect on racism in different ways - Colorblindness is a bad thing; it is denying the consequences of racial thinking. A line I like in this reading is "We do not claim to be genderblind... how do we claim to be colorblind?". It is a very good question, we think that race is a topic we can not talk about, because of societal norms. Because of the idea that people do not see color it has written off the evils of racial oppression "Race, Hierarchy, and Hyena phobia in the Lion King (6.2)" - The Lion King shows a naturalized hierarchy. - Compares hyenas to racially discriminated groups The reading goes into how the Lion King says that some creatures, or races, deserve to live in poverty. "Bella's Choice: Deconstructing ideology and power in the twilight saga (6.3)" - Twilight follows a set of ideals called an ideology - Suggests SCWAMP Bella puts her soul on the line for a man, letting him control her life The ideologies of SCWAMP are very prevalent in Twilight "Mass Media Indians and American Indians" - A lot of knowledge on American Indian culture is seen through the eyes of mass media . - Indians are a culture who has not progressed since the 18"century. Due to the portrayal of Indian culture through mass media and movies, people tend to believe that the culture is the same as it was hundreds of years ago. This shows the hold that the media has on the world, and how it allows certain stereotypes to hang around. Your notes should reflect that you have read all assigned reading/ watched assigned films, and should include new or important concepts, terms, and definitions.
