The goal of this assignment is to craft an introduction that will ultimately be used for your final research paper. Your introduction will be based on, but not limited to, the research articles you identified and summarized previously. Recall that for your article summary assignment, you grouped articles into one of three categories. These categories will form the basis of your introduction.

The first part of your introduction will address why it is important to research your topic. Establishing this need will be achieved by first, discussing the life history of the disease and negative health outcomes associated with the disease. Next, you will discuss the trends (i.e., prevalence, incidence) of your disease in both the population at large as well as your specific population. Do we see similar trends over time for both groups? When referencing an article, briefly explain the methods and findings.

The second part of the introduction will shed light on cause, set of causes, or manner of causation of your disease or condition with particular focus on your population of interest. You can look to address these causes through the multiple spheres of influence (e.g., biological, individual, social, environmental, etc.) outlined in the Social Ecological Model. When referencing an article, briefly explain the methods and findings. Limitations and future directions should be discussed cohesively.

In the third and final part of the introduction, you'll discuss several interventions aimed at reducing the selected disease or condition with particular focus on your population of interest. When discussing these interventions, be sure to explain the rationale for the intervention (i.e., what mechanism or cause are they looking to target?), a basic summary of the methods, and the findings of the interventions. Lastly, limitations and future directions should be discussed cohesively.

Other points to consider:

  • Your Introduction should be between 2.5 to 3.5 pages in length, 12-point font, double-spaced.
  • You will be expected to use proper APA citation in text, and on the reference page.
