Chapter 2 Application Layer Bob Jones, manager of Sales and Marketing, recently read an article about the Internet in Business Week and has raised the issue of the Internet with President Lee Coone. Jones has asked you to help him understand the ways in which the Internet could help increase NDAS's presence in both the international and domestic markets. He is also interested in ways NDAS could make effective use of e-mail and the Web in achieving increased productivity. NDAS currently has a Web site, but it is essentially just a simple brochure that introduces NDAS. The two most negative comments about Jones's ideas came from Peter Browne and Les Coone. Peter Browne stated that the Fleet Maintenance Division is doing just fine as it is and that one should not "try to fix something that isn't broken." Les Coone commented that NDAS should not jump the gun on videoconferencing; it is too early to invest in that new technology." Exercises President Coone has given you two tasks: 1. Prepare a brief management summary on the technical essential aspects of the Internet and the World Wide Web and how they work. Remember, the audience is not technical. The president is confused about the relationship between the World Wide Web and the Internet and often states that they are the same. Please be sure to explain this in your summary. 2. President Coone is particularly in trigued with the potential of the Internet, but he and the other members of management are not exactly sure how the Internet can be used to improve NDAS's competitive edge. Present some alternatives, keeping in mind how many of the departments in Case Figure 1-2 may benefit. President Coone reminds you that NDAS expects to enlarge its scope in the international market. Plans call for first offerings to be services to Great Britain, France, and Germany, with later expansion to South America. President Coone wants you to involve Jones in your work on the Internet. 3. With the updates planned for the network, President Coone wonders what other benefits could be derived from the network. One that he particularly is intrigued by is video conferencing.
