The world economy centered on the United Nations of Europe and depended on these countries to trade with them. The closer a country is to modernizing with the Nations of Europe the better off it is. The more your country was economically and socially developed the better off it was and higher up in class it was looking at it through stratification. The European Nations made up the core Nations and everyone else fell into two categories, peripheral, and semi-peripheral. The peripheral countries completely depended on trade and had little resources to offer in return. The semi-peripheral nations were not as bad off but still were not as successful as the Western countries. Brazil falls into the semi-peripheral category. Brazil has more than a few options such as coffee and fruit for export so if something happens to a crop, they have something else to fall back on.
