Objective Construct and deliver a 4-5 Minute Speech designed to persuade the audience for a particular claim of policy. The speech will be recorded and submitted. Research Collect research from a variety of credible sources to explain ideas clearly, fully, and memorably. (Primary research should come from academic and legal journals versus commercial websites/blogs and short newspaper articles (i.e, Library Databases & Academic Journals NOT Huffington Post & Wikipedia hits from a basic google search). Academic Journals are peer-reviewed and make fuller and more developed arguments than blogs or newspaper/magazine reports or editorials. Speech Components: All speeches should have an identifiable introduction, body, and conclusion with at least three verbal citations from scholarly or qualified research, with an attached bibliography added to the outline. Introduction: The introduction should compel the audience to listen with a brief: 1) attention-getter (Avoid Questions), 2) a powerful and succinct thesis statement, 3)relevance for audience, and 4)quick preview of the main point claims/ideas. Body: Speeches should contain 2-4 main points, organized in such a clear way that the audience can make sense of the message. Once the main points and organizational pattern are set (topical, chronological, problem/solution, refutation pattern, etc.), identify sub-points in the correct location. You need to state claims clearly before supporting each claim with reasons and cited research. Once you have stated and supported a claim with evidence* and explanation, transition to the next claim (provide support) or move to the conclusion. (Outline template below) You must also include responses to, and refutation of, at least, one common counter Conclusion: Speeches should include a brief summary of the main points and thesis, as well as a creative concluding thought/statement that leaves the audience thinking about the speaker's message.
