Objective & Rules

The objective of this lab is to learn how to count and perform addition in two of the most

common number systems used by computers. These two number systems are binary and

hexadecimal, or base $2$ and base $16.$ This lab is performed in teams of two. One person on the

team is the driver, and the other is running the calculation system. The driver will draw a stick

with a binary number on it$,$ and tell it to their teammate. The teammate will then add the

number to a running total using pen and paper. Once they have the new total, they tell the

driver, who then moves the CEENBot the appropriate number of positions on the track.

Drawing all the numbers will get the CEENBot halfway down the track, at which point the team

members will swap roles for the second half. Two teams will face off at a time and the first to

the finish line wins.

Scoring

You and your lab partner will be a team. Scoring will be based on the time it takes you to get to

the end once you start. The shorter time, or the first to the finish line wins. You are only

competing against the team going at the same time, not every team at once. There will be $2$

tournament structures, a binary tournament and a hexadecimal tournament. Teams will be

randomly assigned to slots in the binary tournament. Once a team loses out of the binary

tournament, they are placed in the hexadecimal tournament. You must participate at least one

round in both tournaments to satisfy the requirements of the lab.

Report

Write a standard report on this lab. Explain your strategy and what you learned about base $2$

and base $16$ number systems. Include the final page of this handout in your report. The

background should talk about how these number systems are used in ECE and the results

section should include your analysis of the effectiveness of the lab and how it could be

improved.
