Objective: Students will determine the storage volume required to store rainfall by tabular and graphical methods (see Example 17-1, page 328-330, In Field Gulde to Environmental Engineering for Development Workers for a more complicated problem). You can work together but must submit separate assignments.
Tabular Method: The National Environmental Health Forum provides the follow: ing equation for calculating tank size:
Vi=VA1+( Rmofif - Demand )
In this equation, Vi is the theoretical volume of water remaining in the tank at the end of each month. A negative Vl means demand is greater than supply. Vbs is volume of water left in the tank from the previous month, starting with an empty tank. Runofif is the term used to describe the supply from ralnwater. Demand can be estimated on a month-by-month basis or averaged over a year If one only has annual precipitation.
Design Constraints: Assumerunoffis calculated for 225m2 roof area with 100% capture efficiency. The monthly rainfall is provided in the table below. Demand is assumed constant (24m3month ) for eight months out of the year as shown in the table. It is also assumed another water source is in used for four months so that the harvested rainwater is not needed during that period).
Tabular Method. Fill in theremainder of the Table below. The largest Vy you obtain represents the required ank size. Submit the completed table in your assignment and make sure your final answer stands out to a reader.
