SCENARIO

You have been contacted by the owner of the Unforgettable Wave located as South Padre Island. You sell a wide range of "island" beach apparel, tourist items and you have a bar and snack bar looking out towards the gulf. The business sells unique gifts built by local artist including specialized stain glass with "island" themes.

Many winter Texans visit the store whenever they're in the area. The owner also states he has a large population of Mexican residents who come to the store. Presently the owner has an "informational" website. The business does sell products online but only through "mail order" and only accepting physical checks or cash. This process takes too much time to complete the ordering process. The owner wants to revise the website to provide the ability to sell products and pay for them online.

They also sell products in a "booth" at the island and local events. They feel they are losing sales because method of payment requires cash only. They would like to be able to sell their products accepting credit cards.

You have been asked to help the business examine other payment processing alternatives for the business. The owner specifies the method must be able to handle all major credit cards and also perform currency conversions. Most important is the payment processing method must be reasonably priced. The margins for the items they sell are between 10 and 30 percent of the selling price, but the shipping and handling of items sold through the website reduces the margins by 5-10 percent of the selling price. The business would like to keep the overall payment processing cost below 4 percent of the selling price if possible. The owners want three payment processing options that might be suitable for the business. They also want a portable option to read and accept credit cards using the booth.
