The particip ating computers in an ftp session must have IP addresses and TCP/IP protocol (that op erates based on the Internet model). We will discuss TCP/IP protocol in details later in the class. To get to ftp, perform the following:

Type ftp and the address of an ftp site ( ftp.ni.com )

Type anonymous for the User

Transfer the file README.txt from the ftp site to y our machine (take the screen shot by holding ALT and Print Screen keys. Then, y ou need to open a Word document to paste it by clicking the Paste button i n the Word document)

Cables:

Cat5 is a category 5 cable that can transmit up to 100Mbs. The Cat5 cables are currently the most used cables in various network structures around the world. The Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable is the most common type of a cat5 cable used in the industry. Often, at least one end of a Cat5 cable is connecte d to a plug called RJ45. An RJ45 is used to plug into a Network Interface Card (NIC), a computer, or a networking device. The Cat5 cable tool kit is used to attach a Cat5 ca ble to RJ45 connector (you need to know the pin configuration of RJ45 in advance). A cable checker is utilized to see if the RJ45 is connected to the cable correctly or not. A demonstration will be given in the lab.

Assignments:

Check the Cat5 cable given to you and see how many twisted pairs are in a Cat5 cable. Are the wires color-coded? Name them. Using Web or library resources, identify the pin co nfiguration of RJ 45 for CAT 5 cable.

Network Interface Cards (NIC): Network interface cards operate at the physical lay er of the OSI model. The play and plug NIC cards are often used in todays computers. They are usually plugged into a PCI expansion bus of a computer. The older NIC cards p lugged into ISA expansion buses. Check your computer in the lab and see if it has a NIC card or not. Click Start Right Click My Computer Click Properties Device Manager Network Adaptors

Assignments:

Identify the Network Card Driver in your computer. Right click on it and then click properties to identify the NIC card manufacturer. Also identify the Interrupt Request number used in your NIC card by clicking on the Res ources tab.

Click on the Advanced tab and click on the Value dr op-menu. Write what you see under Value. What is the use of those settings under Val ue?

Networking Devices: Working with Hubs

Hubs are networking devices for connecting computer s to each other. A hub may contain several ports for computer connections. Hubs also e nhance the incoming signals by removing noise and performing signal amplification. A hub broadcasts incoming data (in form of signals) to all its ports but only a comput er connected to the port that has the same address as the incoming data can take the data . A demonstration of a hub will be given in the lab.
