Case 4 StarBeer is an upcoming beer brewery located in the surroundings of Philadelphia and prides itself for observing the German Purity Act which has made its beer a very popular drink among local students. As a consequence of this surge in demand, StarBeer investigates opportunities to increase its daily output rate. The beer is produced in a continuous process comprising four distinct stages, as shown in Figure 1. At present, there are no buffers between process steps. You may assume that the weight change occurring during the process steps can be neglected. Also, the time it takes to fill the pipeline is negligible. The plant is being operated for 8 hrs/day. Brewing Fermentation e The Brewing operation basically mixes malt with grains and has a capacity of 24,000 Ibs/hr. e Inthe Fermentation step, yeast is added to aid fermentation of the liquid. Its capacity is 23,000 Ibs/hr. e Filtration removes any unwanted residual ingredients. It has a capacity of 25,000 Ibs/hr when it is running. After 105 min of operation, the filter has to be exchanged, which takes 15 min. e Finally, in the Kegging step, the beer is being put into kegs and is then ready for distribution. The kegging capacity is 20,000 Ibs/hr
