One of the most widely discussed prime-time interviews leading to the 2020 presidential election featured Fox News' Chris Wallace and former President Donald Trump at the White House. Wallace received significant praise for fact-checking the president during the interview; this was astonishing, perhaps, to some because of the network he works for, and to others because it seemed as though the President was unprepared to support his (unsupportable) claims. (More recently, Wallace resigned from Fox News, and fromer President Trump ended an interview with NPR when he was asked to defend claims about election fraud.) Believe it or not, there is even a Fact Checkers Code of Ethics developed by the Poynter Institute, a global leader in developing investigative journalistic principles. We don't often see fact-checking in real time as in the Wallace/Trump interview. Still, in the past several years, online fact-checkers have become prolific in responding to widespread misinformation. How effective are these fact-checkers?
