Question:
Operations/SCM is a multidisciplinary field. One field, in particular, that tends to play a larger role than some others is marketing. As you can see from last week's content, we are focusing on product & service design, and then this week we are focusing on capacity. Related to this, is engineering in terms of the design for a specific purpose. Design for re-manufacturing, design for cost, and so on. Then the manufacturing capacity to fulfill such targets.
Now: consider the intersection of these two areas. When marketing finds that the consumer wants a thinner and thinner cell phone, engineering challenges arise with respect to meeting other expectations of the consumer (i.e. battery, heat transfer, etc.). And, now, manufacturing capacity needs to be secured (internally or outsourced) to fulfill the required demand.
what role do operations and supply chain management have in this (the product design process)? What is the strategic role of capacity (and the management thereof) in modern operations management? How does a contract manufacturer's capacity affect the rest of the supply chain? Provide an example and be sure to include the source. Reflect on your answer based on the recent supply chain disruptions of COVID-19
