Organizations go through changes often. Sometimes the changes are minor, and other times the changes are major. The role of change management is imperative to an organization to ensure there is a smooth transition from the old ways to the new ways.
When change happens in an organization it typically means that the employees of the organization have to learn and adapt to new ideas and processes. Change often creates resistance, anger, fear of the unknown, and other stressors. Change management assists the organization in getting through these difficult times, and helps the employees in transitioning to the new processes.
Without the proper use of change management all of the negative effects will overcome, and the employees will not process the new changes correctly ultimately causing the organization to fail. The organization needs to be very clear, upfront, and open to comments from its employees to help make the transitions less stressful.
I have many examples of change management from being in the military. The most common one I experienced was change in leadership. This change was always brought on abruptly, causing many stressors among the people and processes. There would always be major changes which caused many people to fear the unknown. When the new leadership would be open and transparent it would significantly ease the new processes into place. Using change management in this example allowed the people to be informed and adapt more quickly to the new leadership.
