Organize your paper into four clearly labeled sections, each addressing one of the prompts:
Section 1: Why Did the Authors Use Moderation/Mediation?
- Summarize the research question and explain why the authors chose this model.
- Discuss the theoretical rationale (e.g., testing interaction effects or indirect pathways).
Section 2: Was It the Most Appropriate Choice?
- Evaluate whether the model fits the research question.
- Consider alternative models (e.g., path analysis, SEM) and justify your stance.
Section 3: Visual Display of Results
- Did the authors use tables or figures?
- Describe how the visuals were used to present findings (e.g., regression coefficients, interaction plots).
Section 4: Do the Results Stand Alone?
- Can you interpret the study from the results section alone?
- Are the tables/figures clear, complete, and informative without needing the full text?
for the Mediator Model
The Baron and Kenny (1986) method of testing for mediation assumes the following:
*The independent variable (IV or X) must be significantly correlated with the Dependent Variable (DV or Y).
*The Independent Variable must be significantly correlated with the Mediator variable (MV)
*The Mediator Variable must be significantly correlated with the Dependent Variable (DV or Y).
These relationships are tested with simple correlation and regression (by evaluating Pearson's rs and the unstandardized regression coefficients, bs).
The mediated (indirect) effect is tested through three regressions and Sobel's test.
Model 1: *Independent variable predicting the dependent variable
Model 2: *Independent variable predicting the mediator
Model 3:*Independent variable and mediator predicting the dependent variable.
Sobel's test for the significance of the indirect effect of the IV on the DV through the Mediator variable (MV).
*The following conditions must be met in the results to support mediation:
*The independent variable is shown to significantly influence the dependent variablein the first regression equation.
*Independent variable is shown to significantly influence the mediator in the second regression equation.
*Mediator must significantly influence the dependent variable in the third equation.
Here, the independent variable and mediator are entered as predictors in an MRA.
*Complete mediation is present when the independent variable no longer influences the dependent variable after the mediator has been controlled and all of the above conditions are met.
*Partial mediation occurs when the independent variable's influence on the dependent variable is reduced after the mediator is controlled.
