Original Question - By now, your team will be showing signs of success or conflict. Which approach in Chapter 7 in Figure 7.1 do you think is the best approach to resolving conflict? Do you think it depends on the personalities involved?
Initial Post - According to our book: "Conflict is the process by which people or teams perceive that others have taken some action that has a negative effect on their interest". Misconceptions regarding conflicts include: conflict is bad and should be avoided, misunderstanding is something that causes conflict, and that all conflicts can be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. I believe that when it comes to conflict resolution in the workplace, something must be compromised or accomodated, and it does not always have positive outcome for everyone. Lets review conflict resolution approaches:
- Confrontation - trying to win a conlict can impact decision making process
- Collaboration - team should be able to look for solution that satisfies everyone
- Avoidance - not the best way to address the conflict by simply ignoring it.
- Compromise - each participant "gives in" something
- Accomodation - if a team member decides to give up their position in order for conflict to be resolved, it can impact the value of their opinion and ideas.
In my opinion, it is important to collaborate and compromise in order to avoid or resolve a conflict. Is also strongly depends on personality. Issues can arise if someone has faulty communication, misunderstanding about someone's behavior, or inappropriate criticism. It is important to build social relations and understand cultural differences in the workplace. "An open and supportive communication environment allows the team to resolve their differences without disrupting the relationships within the team" (Levi 2017).
