our unique JOURNAL EXERCISE 3.8: PRE-WRITING: DRAMATIC MONOLOGUE 10 Points Anyone can be a poet-you don't need a startling new vision, just some thoughts and words to illustrate those thoughts in a clear, lyrical way. The type of poem you'll be writing is a dramatic monologue. In this form of poetry, a character in the poem speaks to one or more listeners. The listeners don't answer, but their reactions may be guessed at by the reader. The most famous American example of a dramatic monologue is "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S. Eliot. You'll read an excerpt from that poem later in this lesson. You may find it helpful to glance ahead at his poem now, though, to get a sense of the form. Eliot's poem is in Anthology D. If you have access to the Internet, there are more examples you can look up, such as Robert Browning's "My Last Duchess" and Robert Hayden's 'Night Death, Mississippi". You can use any style of poetry for your dramatic monologue, free verse, blank verse, sonnet. etc. Before you begin the reading for this section, brainstorm five character possibilities for your poem. Sometimes poets used the fictional epitaphs from gravestones to provide the voices for their poems. What character will inspire you? What does that character have to say? Once you have your list of five possible character, choose one of them that appeals to you most and write some lines the character might say and some figures of speech you must use in your poem. Put this in your Lesson 3 journal andlabel it "Exercise 3." You should have a list of 5 possible characters. Circle/highlight the one you are choosing.
