Over the past few years, shaming on social media has become a prevalent practice for righting injustices committed by powerful individuals whose bad behavior would otherwise go unchecked. When a dominant group is reinforced by the behavior of such an individual, their transgressions may be given a pass by the group. Those offended by these passes use social media to call out individuals who abuse their power and suggest this is an important means of fighting social injustice. The dominant group in turn might pejoratively label this shaming as call out culture or cancel culture. However, exclusion and public humiliation are not new practices. They are common techniques of control in both nonhuman and human cultures, and they are seen across political and social affiliations. Radical behaviorism provides a functional analytic lens from which to examine cancelling, its origins, its strengths, and its potentially harmful fallout.
