Overview - beams and trusses
In this first assignment, we will focus on two key elements used in the design and
construction of structures throughout New Zealand and the world. We will ask you to work
through a series of calculations to show your understanding of the support reactions, shear
forces and bending moments which can act on these types of elements.
Question 1. Beams
Question 1 is based on the information in Figure 1. A simply supported beam with a roller
support at B and a pinned support at D carries two UDL loads of 4kNm between point A to
B and 4kNm between point C to D, and a concentrated load of 5 kN at point A and 10 kN at
point C as indicated in figure below.
Question 1a
Calculate the support reactions.
Question 1b
Calculate shear forces and draw the shear force diagram.
In your answer, find the maximum shear force acting on the beam.
Question 1c
Calculate the bending moments and draw the bending moment diagram.
In your answer, find the maximum bending moment acting on the beam. Determine the
location of point(s) of inflection (contraflexure) and calculate the BM at this point.
