Paper 1 Assignment

In this first paper for this course, you will be composing, revising, and submitting a final copy of a letter addressed to ONE of the professors presented in this document.

The manner in which you address your professor should be shaped by your awareness of who they are. This requires you to carefully read and think about the professor's description, consider the various points on producing effective writing discussed thus far in class, and apply these ideas, to produce a letter that effectively engages your target audience.

In regards to content, you will be attempting to convince your professor of the validity, or lack thereof, of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s position in his letter "A Letter From Birmingham Prison." When you make your points on King's argument, you will need to support your opinion with AT LEAST ONE reference to his usage OF EACH of Aristotle's rhetorical moves, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. For each of these rhetorical moves you reference and integrate into your position, you will need to support it with a relevant quote. You should have AT LEAST THREE QUOTES. Each quote needs to be properly framed, based on the instructions provided in class.

Finally, the overall structure of your paper should meet the standards discussed regarding formal letter-writing.

What follows are the three professors you can choose from and a brief description of each.

A. Professor Theodore Leticien

I have spent most of my life studying, researching, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals and/or experimenting besides teaching and grading. Ive never worked in the private sector. I am a staunch believer in public education. I know how the world works in theory - but am aware reality is often quite different. But still, I have a high standard. I appreciate specific and very well thought-out arguments that substantiate claims in a logical manner.

B. Professor Sarah Vandross

I am very experienced but not particularly ambitious. I would say I am pragmatic and very realistic. I dont appreciate nonsense nor dreams. I have seen all sorts of student-excuses in my years of experience. I accept none of them. I look forward to my retirement. I appreciate the classics and find most novel ideas to be products of a softer, delusional, new age. I believe hard work and dedication will always lead to success. The knowledge is already there. People just need to apply themselves. This mentality has led me to a high rank in my university.

C. Professor Boris Gordon

I am a prominent law professor, prolific author, and observant Catholic. I have been vocal and uncompromising on such issues as abortion and same-sex marriage, considering them unchristian. I believe in free market principles. I have a strong belief in the power of the individual and his family. Strong families create a strong nation. I have earned impeccable credentials and always maintain an unfailingly courteous tone. Regardless of the point, rigorous logic is necessary.
