Week 5 Service Robots-Derek v Derek Sarringer posted Jun 15, 2025 11:56PM yy Subscribe Introduction In today's constantly changing society, there are robots being used to complete tasks that were once performed by humans. These robots include service robots which are becoming more common in industries and used for many purposes. According to the International Organization for Standardization, a \"service robot\" as a "robot in personal use or professional use that performs useful tasks for humans or equipment"(IFR International Federation of Robotics, n.d.). Service robots are used to help humans by completing tasks that are time consuming, repetitive, or can cause injury to humans. They also help with work in remote areas, during night shifts, or in difficult working conditions. Some are completely autonomous (without human supervision) while others provide manual direction by people. Others are considered \"semi-autonomous' and rely on people to conduct tasks (SoftBank Robotics Team, 2024). Service robots can be categorized as a service robot if they can perceive and understand what is going on around it and affect it, can also be described as industrial (automate production) and service robots (help with difficult and routine tasks) (Oleg, 2021). Service robots used ina personal capacity could be robot vacuums, robotic kitchens, nurses, pets, or used for sex. Professional robots could be robotic consultants, tour guides, managers, and diagnostic or delivery robots (Oleg, 2021). Service robots can be used to help protect confidentiality, availability, and integrity in a data center by providing autonomous monitoring (providing continuous surveillance, real time threat detection and response, and automated perimeter security), Enhanced access controls, automated maintenance and monitoring, and provide data center efficiency and security (Beccy, 2024). The availability of tasks removes the need for humans to perform the same tasks and frees them up from mundane tasks and frees them to do tasks that require human thought. By protecting the integrity of data centers, service robots can provide enhanced monitoring, improved efficiency and reduced human errors, use data to make decisions, and automate security. Service robots are used in both personal and professional roles and can complete many tasks. They can be used to help improve many tasks in data centers to free up humans to focus on matters that require human thought and action. References
