Question: Part 1: Read Gallup's Article First you will read Gallup's Article to find the claimed proportion of adults in the US who have tried marijuana.

Part 1: Read Gallup's Article

First you will read Gallup's Article to find the claimed proportion of adults in the US who have tried marijuana. This proportion is our best guess at the true proportion of US adults that have tried Marijuana, (There are over 200,000,000 adults in the US, we cannot ask them all if they've tried marijuana so we will use it as p.

Part 2: Findp

We need to compare the national proportion as reported by Gallop with a sample proportion. We will use the proportion found in question 7 of our survey for project 1 asp. Use the sample size from our survey when computing the standard error.

Part 3: Complete the hypothesis test.

Write out the null (Ho) and alternative (Ha) hypotheses. Perform the hypoth- esis test at the= 0.05 level.

(Keep in mind that we are assuming that Gallup's proportion is the true US proportion, so you should use the p ( notp) and the class sample sizenwhen computing the standard error.)

Part 4: Write the conclusion to your test

Do you reject or fail to reject your null hypothesis? What does this mean about how Massachusetts adults compare to the country as a whole in terms of having tried marijuana?

Also discuss which error type you may have made, explain why.

Part 5: Where did we go wrong?

There are several reasons why this hypothesis test is less than perfect. I want you to listat least two of them.

These are a few things to get you thinking about what might have gone wrong. Don't think of these as questions you need to answer.

  1. Consider the wording of Gallup's question (click "view methodology..." at the end of the Gallup article) vs our survey question.
  2. You might want to think about the population we surveyed from, are they similar enough to gallop's population to really make a comparison?
  3. You might want to think about the type of sampling we did (What kind of sampling is it? Its not a simple random sample, is that a problem?).
  4. You might want to discuss Gallup's methodology. Is it really the best estimate for p? (If not you'll be tasked with finding a better one online).

Part 6: Correcting the mistakes

In part 5 you will have realized that we probably shouldn't have done this hypothesis test. What I would like you to do is address how we could have corrected the issues in part 5 to make our hypothesis test more legitimate.

Feel free to discuss any part of this project in the forums. You'll especially want to discuss possible answers for 5 and 6 before you turn them in.
