Communication is one of the most critical elements in any organization, and I have had firsthand experience with how poor communication can lead to errors or worse over the years in the aviation field. However, one example I will share is from my time working on the flightline. Crew chiefs on an aircraft launch had to remove lockout pins as part of the pre-launch procedure. The aircraft took off, and immediately called an in-flight emergency because the nose landing gear indication did not clear. After the aircraft returned to the parking spot, we inspected the gear and discovered that one of the two nose landing gear pins was still in place. As a result, the pin caused damage to the actuator, and the aircraft was grounded for a couple of days awaiting the new part. After the airmen were questioned, it was discovered that the root cause was miscommunication, as they had assumed the other had removed the last pin. Cross-checking responsibilities and verbal confirmation between the crew chiefs could have prevented this issue. Aviation safety research shows that ineffective communication is a leading contributor to human error and accidents (Helmreich, 2000).
Leadership also plays a vital role in shaping employee motivation, morale, and organizational success.I have seen firsthand how leadership can affect the workforce, ranging from autocratic to transformational to laissez-faire. But I think Eleanor Rooseveltprovides an excellent example of positive influence through leadership. She redefined the role of First Lady, then chaired the U.N. Commission on Human Rights and helped guide the drafting of theUniversal Declaration of Human Rights, exemplifying leadership grounded in empathy, communication, and moral purpose. Her ability to build consensus amid deep ideological divides illustrates persuasive, values-based leadership that elevates attitudes and mobilizes collective action (Coats, 2022).
