Purpose To explore the relationship between current through a wire and its resulting magnetic field Materials : You will need access to the Activity 5 part 2 video which uses a 50 -turn rectangular coil of wire a DC power supply and 7 small compasses Procedure : 1. In the video Activity 6 part 2 you will see the loop wire shown in figure 3.1 in that specific configuration . On the disk at the center of the loop seven compasses are placed . The video will show the effects on the compasses of running a current on this wire . Watch the video and pause the video as prompted . The video will help you answer some of the following questions 50-turn coil wire Compass Circular Plate DC Power Supply Use "outside" input / output Figure 3.1 The left side shows the configuration of the loop apparatus . The right side is a diagram of the disk where the compasses are to be placed 2. Make predictions and observations on your report by answering the following questions i. What is the source of the magnetic field you are measuring when the current is set to 0.0 A? ii. Consider the direction of the current , I, through the loop of wire , trace the wire , and apply the Right Hand Rule to predict the direction of the magnetic field when you turn the current , I, on the DC power supply to about 1.0 A. ii. Create a sketch like the right side of figure 3.1 and write a sentence predicting direction of the magnetic field iv. Does your prediction align with what you actually observe ? Why or why not ? v. What is / are the source (s) of the magnetic field when the current through the wire is turned on ? What are the different magnetic field sources to consider around the loop
