Part 6: Density (Kitchen Activity) (3 pts.)
You will need the following materials: dark corn syrup (or honey), water, vegetable oil, and bleach (~ cup of each liquid), ice, and a tall clear drinking glass.
Procedure:
- Being careful not to get dark corn syrup (or honey) on the side of the glass, pour the syrup into the middle of the glass.
- Tip the glass slightly and pour the vegetable slowly down the side of the glass. Gently swirl the glass.
- Mix a few drops of red food coloring with water in one of the mixing cups. Add the water to the glass. Wait a few moments to let the liquids settle out. Gently swirl the glass.
- Carefully add the bleach to the glass. Gently swirl the glass. Wait a few moments and record your observations.
- Add an ice cube and note where it settles.
Questions:
- Where did the bleach end up? How do you know?
- Describe the order of liquids from TOP TO BOTTOM (or include a photo). Be sure to include the position of the ice cube.
- The liquids form layers based on differences in density. Which liquid is the most dense? Which is the least dense? How do you know?
