Part 6: Density (Kitchen Activity) (3 pts.)

You will need the following materials: dark corn syrup (or honey), water, vegetable oil, and bleach (~ cup of each liquid), ice, and a tall clear drinking glass.

Procedure:

  1. Being careful not to get dark corn syrup (or honey) on the side of the glass, pour the syrup into the middle of the glass.
  2. Tip the glass slightly and pour the vegetable slowly down the side of the glass. Gently swirl the glass.
  3. Mix a few drops of red food coloring with water in one of the mixing cups. Add the water to the glass. Wait a few moments to let the liquids settle out. Gently swirl the glass.
  4. Carefully add the bleach to the glass. Gently swirl the glass. Wait a few moments and record your observations.
  5. Add an ice cube and note where it settles.

  1. Where did the bleach end up? How do you know?

  1. Describe the order of liquids from TOP TO BOTTOM (or include a photo). Be sure to include the position of the ice cube.

  1. The liquids form layers based on differences in density. Which liquid is the most dense? Which is the least dense? How do you know?
