Part II Northwind Sample Database
Database steps and deliverables:
- Download the Northwind Data file from Blackboard in the Project Introduction to Access (Taylor 2013) folder. Save to your hard drive, and open the file. When opened, click enable content and select Yes to the security warning if it appears.
- Open each table to familiarize yourself with the Northwind Company and its products, customers, orders, shippers, and employees.
- Note: the Category table is simply for background reference to familiarize yourself with the industry Northwind Company operates in. You will not work with this table directly for the purposes of this assignment.
- Under database tools, select relationships. Note that no relationships or primary keys are identified within and among the tables. You will do this in steps 5-6.
- Open the Order table in design view. Select 3 different fields and investigate the data input validation controls (15 points total).
- Hint: think about Step B from the tutorial guide; also when you click into the field properties, descriptions of the data input validation controls are on the right hand side).
- Identify 1 control that the database designer has used for each field.
- Explain 1 data entry error each control prevents. Be specific! Each control and error must be unique across the three different fields selected.
| Field Name (1 point per field) | Input Validation Control (2 points per control) | Error Prevented (1 point per error) |
| Example: OrderDate | Field formatted as medium date. |
Additional example: Cannot enter date with too many/few characters. |
