Part II Technical Object or Technical Mechanism Description 10% Write a technical object or mechanism description of a C-clamp. This document will be different from the extended technical definition that you wrote last week. Such a description should provide a detailed overview the physical aspects of a tool, machine, or other mechanical device. The mechanism description you produce should provide the audience a clear understanding of the mechanism you are describing, including: General appearance and physical properties Overall function/purpose Component parts How the parts interact to create a functioning whole. The goal of the technical description of the mechanism is to ensure that the reader can clearly picture, and grasp the nature of the object being described, what it does, and should provide an overview of how it works or is operated without providing the detailed process or a set of instructions. 1. Provide a basic orientation to the object that includes a brief technical definition, and a statement of when the object is used, by whom, and for what purpose/reason. 2. Provide a general description that includes a labelled diagram. The size of this diagram should be less that a page, and preferably no more than about a third of the page. Place the diagram neatly on the page and make sure that labels and indicator lines are clear and easily visible. 3. Characteristics and component parts are typically included in technical mechanism descriptions; however, the product will vary along with the subject matter, so one or the other, or both may be present, and the length will vary. 4. Select graphical illustrations carefully in by considering the purpose they will play in the document and their usefulness to the reader/user. These might include a photograph, an exploded diagram, a blueprint, and so on. On a separate page, please provide an APA 7 th ed. list of references. 5. Sometimes videos of the mechanism in operation are included. Length: 3 pages; graphical illustrations with figure numbers and labels required and included. References on a separate page (included in page count). VKOCH Jan. 2022 pg. 2 EXAMPLE: The pencil sharpener is a small simple machine that consists of three component parts: a molded plastic body, a small sharp blade, and a single screw that affixes the blade to the body.

Function: The manual pencil sharpener functions to sharpen lead pencils encased in wood by shaving away the worn portion of the lead along with the surface of the wood. In some models, there is a close housing around the device to collect wood shavings and lead debris. Appearance: Size (H, D, W), Weight, Shape, Proportions, Colour, Material, Texture, Design, and so on. The content in this section could appear as sentences or a bulleted list. For this assignment, please write sentences. Relationship to Other Components: When a device has moving parts, relationship to other components becomes more elaborate. However, even with the simple pencil sharpener, the conical shape of the slot for the pencil and the positioning of the blade so that contact with the surface of the pencil is insured are important.
