The goal of the technical description of the mechanism is to ensure that the reader can clearly picture, and grasp the nature of the object being described, what it does, and should provide an overview of how it works or is operated without providing the detailed process or a set of instructions. 1. Provide a basic orientation to the object that includes a brief technical definition, and a statement of when the object is used, by whom, and for what purpose/reason. 2. Provide a general description that includes a labelled diagram. The size of this diagram should be less that a page, and preferably no more than about a third of the page. Place the diagram neatly on the page and make sure that labels and indicator lines are clear and easily visible. 3. Characteristics and component parts are typically included in technical mechanism descriptions; however, the product will vary along with the subject matter, so one or the other, or both may be present, and the length will vary. 4. Select graphical illustrations carefully in by considering the purpose they will play in the document and their usefulness to the reader/user. These might include a photograph, an exploded diagram, a blueprint, and so on. On a separate page, please provide an APA 7 th ed. list of references. 5.
