1. Your group has the role of a Project Management Office (PMO), which has collected a large amount of data on public construction projects in the Washington, D.C., area.
2. Your objectives are to use this data to (a) assess project performance, and (b) make suggestions for future improvement.
3. Its a good idea to divide the work so that you can each be doing a different analysis concurrently.
4. Your report will be graded according to the syllabus. However, there is no model answer, and many good solutions are possible. Please try to make your report prescriptive as well as descriptive.
The learning objectives of this performance assessment exercise are to:
Understand the role of a PMO in benchmarking and evaluating projects.
Understand how to use available data on project performance to identify which projects are typically more challenging.
Learn how to identify areas of weakness within the organizations project portfolio.
Learn how to identify anomalies in project performance data, and what behaviors may be causing them.
Learn how to benchmark resources against other resources, and make recommendations for improvement.
Please follow the steps below:
a. Download the DC construction data file from the Performance Analysis Exercise module on the course website.
b. Analyze the dataset and assess performance of the projects with respect to the following:
a. Frequency of early / on-time / late delivery
b. Distribution of lateness, and explanations
c. Causes of lateness (between different factors)
d. Anything else that seems useful.
You may want to use ANOVA or a paired t-test. You can also do any different analysis you like, so long as it is relevant and done correctly. Please see the following pages for some hints.
Deliverables
1. Prepare a report in the following format (for readability on the classroom screen): a Word document in 12 point Times New Roman font; on the cover page, only the group name and the names of groups members; and then about three more pages with normal margins. You can use single spacing; however long paragraphs with single spacing may be less appealing to read, so emphasize short sentences and bullet points. Any tables or graphs that can be captured in a Word document can be included.
