"That's what's hard," Jordan says. $"$As a marketing guy, I$\text{'}$m very visible, in that the advertisements and press releases I help create are all out there, you know, for everyone to see. But if something goes wrong, the customers rarely say $$Wow$,$ that Director of Marketing did a terrible job.$\text{'}$ More likely, they'll say $$the CEO is a screw$-$up$,\text{'}$ or $$the writers really botched this game,$\text{'}$ or $$the developers don't get it$.\text{'}$ Nobody has expectations of me personally, other than my boss, of course."

You remind Jordan that his boss$$and all his coworkers$$are part of the community as well. When considering the expectations of the community, Jordan shouldn't just count the customers. We're all part of multiple communities, large and small: our families, our work environment, our circles of friends, and so on$.$ When working through his dilemma, Jordan should consider the expectations of all the primary stakeholders.

When considering expectations, look for ones that make sense, set a positive example, and are agreed upon by most members of the community. For example, an unscrupulous boss might give you instructions to falsify a report and then have an expectation that you will keep quiet and do as you're told. But the larger community of your profession would expect you to be truthful.
