In this assignment you are required to demonstrate your knowledge of how to employ components of the CAPRA model, the recognition of specific mental illnesses and/or personality disorders, as well as the appropriate officers de-escalation skill response(s) and the application of the Mental Health Act of Ontario and/or other Criminal Code and provincial legislation.

Oscar is a 22-year-old history major at the university. He was residing with his parents. However, over the last few months his family and friends have noticed increasingly bizarre behaviors. On many occasions theyve overheard him whispering in an agitated voice, even though there is no one nearby. Lately, he has refused to answer or make calls on his cell phone, claiming that if he does it will activate a deadly chip that was implanted in his brain by evil aliens. Until a few months ago his behaviour was normal.

He has accused his parents on several occasions of conspiring with the aliens to have him killed so they can remove his brain and put it inside one of their own. He appears to be very moody and depressed lately. He has started acting out a little aggressively towards others due to his mood swings as well as his delusions and hallucinations.

He refuses to see a doctor for a diagnosis as he believes that they will try to poison him with the medication. He is behind in his school work as he has been missing some classes and has difficulty understanding the academic material. Oscar has been making threats in class to other students and has started carrying a knife for protection from the evil aliens. His parents stressed that he has to seek medical attention, and after arguing with his parents he packed a bag and left the house to live on the street with some homeless friends.

Although Oscar occasionally had a few beers with his friends, while living with his parents, he is now self-medicating using cocaine/heroine and alcohol and any other types of psychoactive street drugs to make him feel better. Oscar is currently experiencing delusions and hallucinations.

You are a police officer on foot patrol in the downtown area of the city. It is 5 p.m. You observe a person lying beside a dumpster behind a restaurant. As you approach the person, you see that he is moaning, very emotional and yelling leave me alone. He has an obvious cut on the left leg that is bleeding. You ask him several times for his name and he yells at you I am Oscar! Oscar Myer the slayer! he then tries to

stand up while holding a knife in his right hand. He is extremely tearful and appears fearful. You attempt to talk to him and he only partially answers your questions and give answers that are completely unrelated.

You ask him to drop the knife, he tells you the aliens have already cut me and I need to slay them. You tell him again to drop the knife and you will help him. He takes a step towards you and falls face down, dropping the knife out of his reach. He keeps yelling dont let them take me again, not gain!

Part 1: Identification of the Problem (6 points)

In detail, identify the mental health issue(s) or psychiatric disorder(s) and indicate the signs and symptoms, including a description of the illness with possible causes and treatment that may be available or other considerations.

What information in the case history would be of concern to you and influence the decision you make as to the type of disorder(s).

What is the problem of self-medication with illicit drugs, identify types, & issues.

Part 2 Investigation (6 points)

Explain under the CAPRA model, who is the direct and indirect clients and what analysis or investigation do you need to do?

On your initial contact with Oscar explain the critical steps you should take to resolve the issue? Illustrate your de-escalation skills. How would you approach him? How do you interact with him? What do you do and what do you not do or should say or not say? What do you need to know from him?

Explain what information in the case history would be of concern to you and influence the decision you make as to the type of disorder. Why should you be concerned a law enforcement officer? Is Use of Force an option? If so what?

Part 3 Response to the Situation (8 points)

Using the CAPRA model, identify your outcome for the case. Use the proper terms

for response options selected, and give an explanation as to why you decided on that particular decision (e.g. detention under Mental Health Act and take to hospital; released on a promise to appear or recognizance, or arrest and taken to jail etc.). Explain fully and in detail.

Discuss the authorities & legislation related to your action. Ensure you cite the proper legislation, quote legislative section, Canadian Federal and Ontario only.

Discuss the challenges and/or positives that may occur due to your decision.

Be specific, which facility you may use if required and why. Remember you are in

Waterloo Region.
