Lab 9 RC Circuits Objective: Learners will be able to 1. Explain charging and discharging of a capacitor using RC circuit. 2. Calculate time constant and the time it take to charge or discharge a capacitor. 3. Plot the graph of change in voltage and current with time for a give RC circuit. Procedure: 1. Use following link for the simulation: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/circuit-construction-kit-ac-virtual- lab In this simulator, you can built RC circuit using drag and drop. To change the settings of any circuit element click on that element and look for a small window at the bottom of the screen. By clicking check boxes on right, you can include various meters as shown in the figure below. 2. Built a simple RC circuit with 50 0 resistor in series with 0.2 F capacitor, a 25 V battery and a switch (open). Make sure "show current" is checked and click the radio button for electrons if needed. 3. Use a voltmeter, a non-contact ammeter, and a stop watch to facilitate voltage and current readings. 4. First start the stopwatch. Close the switch. Record voltmeter and ammeter readings at regular time intervals in Table 1. Record following data: R = Capacitance = Battery voltage= RC time constant = _ a. Plot the graphs of voltage vs time and current vs time. (2 pt) b. Does the current in the circuit increase or decrease? Is this change linear or exponential? (1 pt) c. What is the maximum voltage across the capacitor after a long time? (1 pt) 5. Now remove the battery from the circuit and connect both wires. Repeat step 4. Record the voltage and current data in another table similar to Table 1. (7 pts, pts similar to step 4) a. Plot the graph of voltage vs time and current vs time
