post-construction design section of a levee in New Orleans. You can assume that the
permeability of the levee fill and the stiff clay layer are very low with respect to the loose
to medium-dense sand and silty sand layer. Therefore, the levee fill and clay layer are
impervious for practical purposes. Laboratory permeability tests conducted on samples of
sand from Borings B-2 and B-3 resulted in an average of k=0.02 cm/s.
Determine the following:
a) Plot the flow net using 4 flow lines (including flow lines on impervious boundaries).
b) Calculate the seepage rate per unit length of the levee, q (in ft3/min), for two canal
levels (the tailwater level does not change): Normal operating level (El.2 ft) and
Highest measured water level (El.11.1 ft). Note that this flow will need to be
continuously pumped from
c) Pore pressures at points A, B, and C when the water in the canal is at the highest
measured level (El.11.1 ft).
