Making Estimates in Elections

Suppose in a pre-election poll, a sample of 1,000 people were asked if they were going to vote for Candidate A or Candidate B. Suppose that 48% of the sample said they were going to vote for Candidate A, and 52% said they were going to vote for Candidate B.

Both proportions (48% and 52%) are ESTIMATES of what will happen in the real election. The proportions that occur in the actual election are called the TRUE proportions. The estimates are a "best guess" of what the true proportions are, without actually polling the entire population (which is the actual election).
