Please answer to this discussion post below throughly and detailed. Police officers frequently face a moral dilemma
Question:
Please answer to this discussion post below throughly and detailed.
Police officers frequently face a moral dilemma that they may be tempted to believe a good end justifies bad means for what reasons they believe, for example, to torture a suspect to get their confession or to take laws to their own hands. What do you think about this? Do you believe good ends ever justify bad means?
Dirty Harry Problem is a moral dilemma faced by police officers in which they may feel forced to take certain illegal actions to achieve a greater good. In the film "Dirty Harry" a young girl has been kidnapped by a psychopathic killer named Scorpio. Scorpio demanded $200,000 dollars in ransom. Scorpio buried the young girl with enough oxygen to survive. Harry who is the officer finds Scorpio and tortures him for answers. Harry ends up finding the young girl but she has already died from the lack of oxygen. If the plot was changed, and Harry's actions resulted in finding the young girl alive and ends up saving her life, Harry had a good end in mind. (Finding the girl before she died.) However, what about the means he used. (Torturing the killer and not giving him his constitutional rights before interrogation.) Police officers must operate within the law, they cannot make their own laws. Although Harry attempted to save the life of the young girl, he was still in the wrong. Harry violated police procedure, violated the precepts of the Fifth Amendment, and committed assault. In today's system of law, police cannot use lawful means to achieve worthy goals. The effects of Dirty Harry Problem can lead officers to lose their sense of moral proportion, turn cynical, fail to care, or allow their too passionate caring to lead them to empty dirty means too readily or too crudely. Police officers swear allegiance to their oath of office and U.S. Constitution/State Constitution. Even though it may be tempting, police cannot solve their problems by violating their oath of office and their dedication to our constitution. (168-169)
