Other examples of Brad Smith's effective leadership style include but are not limited to: Intuit, Inc. was incorporated in 1993 by founder Scott Cook. It develops business and financial management solutions for consumers, small businesses, and accounting profession- als. Some of its most popular products are the Quickbooks application for small businesses and TurboTax for income tax preparation. It is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and it has a workforce of approximately 7,900 employees. The mission of Intuit is Powering prosperity around the world" The CEO of Intuit is Brad Smith, who joined the company in 2003 in a leadership role overseeing the Accountant Central community. This led to other leadership positions in the Con- sumer Tax Group and then senior vice president and general manager of the company's small business division. In 2008, he was promoted to his current position as chief executive officer and then as chairman of the board of directors in 2016. Since assuming the role of CEO, Brad Smith has demonstrated that he is a highly effective leader in helping Intuit to realize its mission and potential for growth and success. His belief is that the most important thing that a leader needs to do is to foster a strong corporate culture that supports and reinforces the company's mission and values. This is done by communi- cating the purpose of the company (i.e., its mission to mem- bers of the company across all levels in the organizational hierarchy. Smith also believes that leaders need to create a work environment in which employees' ideas are valued and considered as much as one's own.Other leadership practices that Smith likes to put into practice include building an envi- ronment for "doers" that focuses on action and getting things done and holding regular meetings with employees to pro- mote open communication and discussion of key ideas. Smith's leadership style emphasizes the importance of inspir- ing and encouraging employees to take advantage of every opportunity to move into areas where they have little or no experience or expertise and where they are forced to rely on the "power of inquiry and learning"to be successful. "The ability to learn, adapt and execute is critical" he says. Instilling an entrepreneurial spirit into the Intuit culture is a criti- cal concern in order to encourage "outof-the-box"thinking, risk taking, and innovation. Smith believes that you need to remove barriers to innovation and get out of the way. "Idea Jams" and unstructured sessions give teams of employees the opportunity When he assumed the role of CEO, he spent time in small groups with more than 300 of the company's customer-fac- ing employees in order to obtain feedback from them about what they felt were opportunities and threats facing the company. He has a reputation for engaging in unconventional behav- iors such as wearing a suit of armor or an Elvis costume to motivate his team to achieve a challenging goal. Discussion Questions 1.
