Answer the following questions ensuring that you show all of your working so that your calculations can be followed and understood. Where appropriate, use four signicant gures throughout your workings. a. Expand the expression {a + E )7 as a sum of terms in a and E. b. A process produces containers with a capacity of 1 litre with a tolerance of +.-' 0.001 litre. There is a probability of 5% that a container will fall outside of this range and be judged to be defective. A sample of seven containers is extracted from a batch and measured. Assuming the capacities are normally distributed, use your answer to part (a) to calculate the probability that within the sample: i. all are within tolerance ii. exactly three fall outside of the tolerance iii. three or less are outside of the tolerance. c. Based on the same sample as part (b): i. show that it is appropriate to assume a Poisson distn'bution to analyse this sample ii. recalculate your answers to part (b) (i), (ii) and {iii} assuming a Poisson distribution iii. comment on your results from this calculation {part (in) comparing it with your answers to part (b). d. Based on your answers to parts (b) and (c) above: i. comment on how effective you think sampling seven containers would be in terms of checking that 95% are within the chosen range ii. in the light of your answer to {i}, how would you improve the effectiveness of the sampling to ensure greater condence in the production process
