This saves them from having to inventory massive amounts at each store. But, let us not forget how the distribution centers also help Wal-Mart's online sales. When and order is place through their website, it is either ship to home or ship to store. Regardless of the option the consumer chooses, shipping the product directly from a distribution center that is nearby minimizes the shipping duration. Amazon essentially does the same thing now. They have distribution centers in practically every state now and that is how they can support their Prime 2-day shipping. The future of commerce will be e-commerce when it comes to retail. The brick and mortars won't disappear but they will be reduced in some capacity as people discover the point and click convenience an Amazon or Wal-Mart Online Store can afford the consumer.
