Hyperloop Trial Run Project Project Description Backgrou nd: Virgin Hyperloop One W has built the first phase of their Hyperloop line connecting Los Angeles' Union Station to San Jose's Diridon Station. The line is fairly linear with only gentle curvatures striding the l-S freeway for most of its length. The Hyperloop system consists of a passenger pod (dimensions: 35m length x 4m width x 3m height} powered by propulsion system which magnetically levitates and guides the pod along a central track within the tube. The pod can accelerate to 100km/h in 4 seconds and decelerate to a halt from its top speed within about 800m track distance. The Top Speed is around 950km/h. There are sensors and other equipment/tools in the pod and in the inner walls of the tube to monitor and control any situation. Each pod can seat 50 passengers and the tube is depressurized using vacuum pumps to about 1/4th of atmospheric conditions. Assume that all safety equipment, tools and systems needed to ensure a comfortable journey for passengers in such a high-speed vehicle is already in place. The physical setup of the line is similar to elevated metro/ light rail lines; a cylindrical pipe/tube resting on pillars. Each pillar is 250m apart and every 500m there is a vacuum pump station on the ground attached to a port on the tube vertically above it. There is an emergency exit door right next to this port that can allow 1 person out at a time and on either side of this port is an actuated door setup to close off inner sections of the tube and pressurize back to atmospheric conditions for emergency, overhaul etc. The Project: You are the Project Managerjs) in charge of conducting the first ever trial run of the Hyperloop pod with passengers. This is a very important event for the company and the success of the trial run will have far reaching consequences for the company and the transportation industry as a whole. There will be an inaugural ceremony prior to and a press conference post-trial run. This will be a privately funded project. About 20 of the 50 passengers will include ofcials from the California Department of Transportation and Amtrak, the Governor of California, and company executives such as Sir Richard Branson. There will also be a significant presence on either side of the line (i.e. Union Station in Los Angeles and Diridon Station in San Jose) from the media, academia, people from the industry and the general public. Assumptions: The assumptions for this project are: 0 Your team will develop a complete project plan to prepare and conduct the trial run. 0 The project plan shall include a maximum of three trial runs in preparation for the ofcial trial run. 0 one with an empty pod and two with a pod of less than 50 passengers. 0 You are competing with other organizations for this project and your plan will be presented to Hyperloop's Board of Directors. 0 Your plan must be comprehensive, simple and effective for the Board to greenlight it. o The technical details presented are fictional and meant to aid the planning process.
