For this Discussion Board you are going to make a first effort at critical analysis, applying perspective and perhaps even synthesizing these applications together.

To start : Look up these terms from a few sources, keep in mind that a dictionary definition may not be the guide you need. Look up these terms to see how they are applied in different contexts. You do not need to define these in your response, this is for your own understanding. Dictionary definitions are not necessarily the same as sociological definitions.

There are four different topics you can write about: You may choose one to focus on or combine them as you see fit. Making connections between materials shows higher order thinking and will certainly improve the quality of your response. This may not be something you can do for the first response, but you are surely encouraged to try. We will talk about how this works in our sessions.

The Material for this Discussion Board can be found in the POWERPOINTS tab and in the Weekly Material To Read tab OR in the case of The Social Dilemma, this can be found on Netflix.

These are:

1. Grammar and Salary
2. Perspective
3. McLuhan (this is someone you need to know about)
4. The Social Dilemma

Here is what I would want from each of these choices.

1. Grammar and Salary: This choice would require a critical analysis of the authors main message and how this applies to your life. You are to consider why this article is important, do you agree or disagree and your general thoughts on the article. THIS IS NOT A SUMMARY. If you just summarize you will not receive a grade any higher than a C (60%)
2. Perspective: For this option I want you to apply your Perspective to something related to Media and Popular Culture. So you can choose a story, a trend or a fad ... anything involving Media and/or Popular Culture. This is by far the most "open" topic. An Example could be how a trend, an artist, a politician or maybe a world leader influenced society. Do you like a certain genre of music? If I was to choose I would maybe look at how Grunge music changed everything in the industry in the 90's ... think about it and run your idea by me if you are unsure.
3. Mcluhan : THE MEDUIM IS THE MESSAGE !!! For this option you would explain what this topic means in your own words. How does this ring true, what examples can you think ofjQuery22405727327525709311_1601923729690 Why is this an important concept and how does it fit in the world of today??? ex. Is a text message really a good way to communicate? Is this really a good medium ... what problems occur with this type of communication. This is JUST ONE EXAMPLE. Use it of you want, but there are so many more
4. The Social Dilemma: Similar to Option 1. This choice would require a critical analysis of the main message of the documentary and how this applies to YOUR LIFE. You are to consider why this information is important. Watch the film with this in mind - What did you learn? How do you feel about this? What surprised you? Do you feel used? Do you care? Is Privacy of any kind important to you? Are you surprised by these companies and how they are not perhaps the nice little place you think they are? How about the fact that your information is making people Rich ..... how does that feel? Do you believe this information to be spun by those who made this film or interest groups? HAS/WILL THIS CHANGE YOUR USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA? You may not believe any of it .... Cool ... tell me why.
