Privacy and Data Protection in a Big Data Context: Challenges & Opportunities

The importance of data to the business world has grown enormously in the past decade. From data storage of megabytes, zettabyte and now yottabytes, data are collected and stored within an organisation or outside organisation. With so much data on hand, it is now more important than ever organisation find useful meaning in it, or risk becoming overwhelmed with information. Some businesses are successfully using data to improve how they work, to develop new capabilities, and even to develop new business models. Yet others are struggling to put their data to good use, whether that is better serving customers, finding new prospects, managing risk, understanding their supply chain, or any combination of these. The effort to ensure keeping organisation data intact has also become part of risk management in any organisation.A recent report from Dun & Bradstreet 2020 revealed that businesses have the most trouble with the following three areas: protecting data privacy (34%), ensuring data accuracy (26%), and processing & analyzing data (24%). Of course, these are far from the only big data challenges companies face.
