Retrosynthesis requires you to think backwards, not "What is the product?", but "How do I make it?" For anything be a trivial synthesis, you need to start with the product and focus on your goal, keeping in mind that to be working towards (in the retrosynthetic sense) simpler compound that can be bought, or that were suggested by your instructor. Do accomplish all this, you MUST know your basic synthetic transformations well. Show a way to do the following transformations. 1. (Cf. #2) H 1 2. (Cf. #1) 3. 0 (This should be read as, How do I make this aldehyde from that alkene?) 5. 4. For this one, you'll need to know that periodic acid, H₂IO, cleaves diols to aldehydes and ketones. & 6.
