However, there must be a stakeholder prioritization level when reflecting on ethical decision-making. I prioritize the management team as the most important in decision-making. The management team is involved in setting the direction and vision of the company. They are also responsible for shaping the culture of the firm. Management is tangibly engaged in making daily decisions and should foster communication, transparency, and trust throughout the organization. Management will have the best view of the company and the mindset on how ethical decisions will affect the organization in the short and long term. One real-life example of moral choices made by management would be the decision by Costco executives to raise the minimum wage to $17/hr. Costco's success has been related to excellent customer service, proving to retain and attract top talent. This decision was not made by shareholders, employees, or the community.

The least prioritized stakeholder is the employee. The employee's voice should be heard or consulted during ethical decision-making. Far too often, a firm's managers must consult the employee base on the company's direction or the pros and cons of a tough ethical decision. Companies often provide an employee handbook to guide employees on the proper moral behavior, but it doesn't give them a voice in making change.

There could be some positive change that blossoms if the company would consider employee positions on ethical decisions. Firms could weave high levels of communication and transparency around upcoming ethical decisions. Companies could elect employee representatives on an ethical committee to address ethical choices. Finally, companies could encourage mentors to discuss and lead others to see what sound moral choices look like.

Finally, there could be room to prioritize the community in ethical decisions. We live in a digital world where any action affecting the district is under a microscope. With the advent of social media, words (good or bad) can spread like wildfire. Involving the community in ethical decisions will foster inclusiveness and minimize the negative perception of a company.
