1. Historians of science have argued that the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution mark a real break with the Middle Ages while also acknowledging that some things remained the same. This is true both when focussing on Europe alone or when adopting a more global perspective. Using material from the course, write an essay in which you discuss one or two continuities and one or two discontinuities in science between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period (Renaissance and Scientific Revolution).

2. On the importance of observation and experiment in Early Modern science: we have discussed ways in which observations and experiments became more common in science during the Early Modern period, particularly in anatomy and astronomy (as well as alchemy). Using the example of two scientists, write an essay in which you discuss some of the ways in which observations and experiments impacted science during this period.
