In this study, Schultz and colleagues were interested in how to motivate people to use less water. Prior research suggests that providing people with feedback on how much water they are using (as well as how much their neighbors use), may be an effective way to help people reduce their water consumption. In other words, having a good idea of how much water you use, and how much those around you use, may be an effective way to help people become more aware of their use, and subsequently reduce it. Participants in this study (N = 301) were residents in a suburb in San Diego, California. All residents had their water usage measured during the same, and about half of the residents were randomly assigned to receive regular feedback about their water usage by mail. The remaining residents simply has their water usage measured, and did not receive feedback. In addition to demographic information, the researchers recorded the baseline water usage from each household from the local water district. Residents with baseline water usage higher than the mean were classied as \"High\" users, and the remaining residents as \"Low\" users.
