Please help me answer the following questions based on the information below.
In this experiment you will be synthesizing tert-butyl chloride from tert-butanol and separating it from
the mother liquor by extraction. Once isolated, you will purify the alkyl halide by distillation.
1) You will be provided with a volume of t-butyl alcohol in the covered conical tube.
a. Carefully add 9 mL of HCI, cap the tube securely, and invert 6 times to mix and gently open the
cap to release pressure. Reseal, invert 20 more times, and release the pressure again.
2) Set the test tube aside until approx. 3 mL of the top layer separates.
a.
Use a clean dry dropper to transfer only the top layer to a new test tube. Wash the organic
layer with equal volume saturated aqueous NaCl and allow the layers to separate. Transfer
the top layer to a clean dry test tube.
Dry with anhydrous CaCl2 pellets. When dry, decant into a clean dry round bottom flask (a), add two
or three boiling chips, and distill the product into a graduated test tube surrounded with ice-water (do
not get water in your sample).
Record the temperature range observed during tne product collection and total volume collected. Based on the volume of alcohol used, calculate the yield of both crude and purified product.
The temperature range observed was 20-40celcius, volumn of alcohol used was 3ml, the total volumn collected was 2ml.
Experimental Results (remember concepts from solubility and extraction) :
- Crude and purified yields; show calculations
- Experimental boiling point
- Were we successful in synthesizing our desired product?
- How do you know and at what stage(s) of the experiment could you tell?
- t-Butyl chloride distills at a lower temperature than t-butanol. Offer a reason, in molecular terms, as to why this is so.
