Question
THE STAR: Sunday, 20 Jan 2019 As the world shifts towards the digital economy, employees with digital skills are in demand. But while digital competency is a requirement among job recruits, so too are soft skills. A survey was made on this topic and the survey also found that "young people themselves recognise that academic qualifications are inadequate and acknowledge that they lack the soft skills and work experience that are necessary for getting a good job." (STAR 20/1/19) Employers are seeking "soft" skills including "strong work ethics, good communication skills, creative and analytical thinking, challenge solving skills, acting as a team player, positive attitude, learning from criticism and working under pressure." In addition to soft skills, the trend in hiring is for recruiters and companies to assess job applicants on their attitude towards their careers and life, instead of looking closely at their education and work experience. Big companies like Google and the USA's Southwest Airlines have built reputations as employers who "hire for attitude", and indeed, there are many indications that this track has merit. Statistically, 46% of all new hires fail within the 18 months of starting their job, and a whopping 89% of the time it is related to attitude.

2. As you consider the need for an organizations HR requirement, do you think that hard skills such as a technical talent is more important or soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and attitudes are more important and why? Page 2 of 9
3. Many organizations use recruiters to assist with their human resource needs. What types of competencies would a recruiter requires? Would you prefer to work with a recruiter as an HR professional or rely on your own HR staff?
4. Visit 2 companies and interview the TWO (2) managers (preferably one HR Manager) on: Soft Skills Attitude
5. You will have to create a minimum of 10 interview questions for each of these subjects.
6. Are the majority of graduate students aware of their shortcomings in soft skills and if so, what steps are they taking to overcome them?
7. You are required to provide your own suggestions on how the above skills and attitudes can be learned/improved.
